MATSUMURA SEITO SHORIN-RYU
Introduction:
Welcome to Okinawan
Karate. The Shorin Ryu
Karate that we teach is
a traditional Okinawan
style. Numerous
open-handed forms (katas)
are the foundation of
this highly ef fective
martial arts system. Shorin Ryu was created
in Okinawa during the
early 18th century and
has many Chinese
influences. The Harmony
of Mind, Body and Spirit
(Shin, Karada, Kokoro)
are the core essentials
of effective Martial
Arts. That is why we
developed our patch
using this philosophy.
History:
Okinawa, the birth
place of karate, has
produced many versions
or styles of it's
bare-handed fighting
art. Today's Seito
Matsumura Shorin Ryu is
based on the style known
as Shuri-Te. Shuri-Te
was developed in the
city of Shuri, the
ancient capital of
Okinawa. Ultimately, Shuri-Te developed into
Shorin Ryu. It should be
noted that Shuri-Te
system is characterized
by speedy movements and
is considered more of an
offensive style.
Kusanku, a Chinese
military envoy and
highly skilled Kenpo
Master and is
responsible for
introducing the Chinese
style to Okinawa.
Santonoshi (Tode)
Sakagawa is considered
the first true teacher
of Okinawan Karate.
Sakugawa's martial art
was a mixture of Shuri-Te
and Chinese Kenpo.
Soken "Bushi"
Matsumura is the founder
and organizer of Shorin
Ryu.
Matsumura Nabe
carried on the purest
teaching of Matsumura's
Shorin Ryu. He received
training in the family
style of Matsumura
Shorin Ryu which also
included the secret
techniques of the white
crane.
Hohan Soken is
considered the father of
Matsumura Seito Shorin
Ryu. When he was twenty
three years old he
started learning the
white crane or Hakutsuru.
The Hakutsuru technique
is the advanced level of
Matsumura Shorin Ryu and
is the main part of the
style. It manifests the
Chinese concept of the
soft (defensive) fist
and balance training
while imitating the
delicate movements of
the white crane.

SELF DEFENSE SEMINARS
No matter how
experienced you are or
how confident you feel
in defending yourself,
awareness is a far more
powerful weapon than any
other you practice.
Don't be an easy prey.
Watch for signs that
signal danger when
interacting with a
potential assailant. We
cover and discuss the 5
stages of Self Defense:
Approaching, Closing,
Trapping, Attack and
Aftermath. We also
provided techniques you
can use to defend
yourself against:
Chokes, Punches,
Pushing, Grabs and
Strikes. We work within
your physical
limitations.
Our seminars are
specifically designed
for our audience. We
specialize in women's
and children's self
defense.
BIRTHDAY PARTIES:
Looking for a different
type of birthday party?
We have what you are
looking for. Our
birthday parties
normally last 1 1/2 to 2
hours. We can
accommodate up to 15
children. We have
seating available for
parents who want to
attend.
We offer the
following: a discussion on how children can learn to
recognize danger and how to stay safe. We do
